Character Analysis: Popplet & Tellagami

Anyone a huge fan of a children’s novel in which a dog does NOT die? Count me in.  Especially if that book touches on heart issues and allows students to engage in conversations on internal and external conflict.  If you haven’t read Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Dicamillo with your class, it is a fantastic read.

When transitioning from 4th to 5th grade, I knew this is one of the novels I wanted to keep on my reading list.  In 4th grade, I usually started with the skill of character analysis.  It is an easy skill to teach, but requires students to learn how to use direct quotes.  The big difference between this 4th and 5th grade skill is that students have to be able to analyze two characters instead of one.

Since I was working with a class getting used to using technology, I knew I had to implement an app that was engaging and simple, so we started off building projects in class using Popplet.  It is a favorite of mine due to it’s simplicity, and it allows students to create a graphic organizer using “popples”.

In the past, students read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and made a Popplet for the characterization project as well.  You can read more about that project here.   Below, you will find some of the student work samples made from 5th graders reading Because of Winn-Dixie.

One of the great aspects of using iPads is one is simply never “done”.  For those students who needed additional meaningful work, they were to create an Avatar using Tellagami. You can find those projects below.
